My Imaginary Trade Deadline

July 31 is coming. The non-waiver deadline, always an exciting time of transactions, looms large. In 2011, Detroit received Doug Fister, Wilson Betemit, and (after the non-waiver deadline) Delmon Young. In 2012, the Tigers swindled Miami into trading Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante. Nobody mention 2009, please.
Will the Tigers be wheeling and dealing as the cutoff approaches? Knowing Dave Dombrowski, probably. What is he going to do?

Jose Veras from Houston for Endrys Briceno
Veras gives Detroit a solid option for the back end of the bullpen. He's a right-handed pitcher that a team employing Luke Putkonen and Evan Reed desperately needs. Slotting into the 7th and 8th innings with Smyly, Veras would be the stabilizing presence in the face of turmoil. For their part, Houston gets exactly what they need at this point: high-risk, high upside pitching that won't necessarily be ready by tomorrow.

Brendan Ryan from Seattle for Daniel Fields
Detroit is given a solid defensive shortstop in this deal. Let's be real, Ryan is much better defensively than Ramon Santiago as a backup infielder AND offensively. On top of that, he wouldn't kill the team if Infante was injured or Peralta was suspended. Seattle, in return, gets a high-floor outfield prospect that slots into their terrible hodgepodge of outfielders.

Giancarlo Stanton and Steve Cishek from the Marlins for Nick Castellanos, Avisail Garcia, Andy Dirks, and Bruce Rondon.
Calm down. It's imaginary.
